Per-Answer Explanations (Release 4.5.1 / Mobile 3.1.1)

Per-Answer Explanations (Release 4.5.1 / Mobile 3.1.1)

Overview

Release 4.5.1 introduces Per-Answer Explanations, allowing administrators to provide feedback for individual answers within an assessment question.

Instead of displaying a single explanation for the entire question, explanations can now be configured for specific answer options, blanks, ordering items, and matching items. After submitting an assessment, learners see feedback tailored to the answer they selected or entered, helping reinforce learning and improve knowledge retention.

This feature is available across both web and mobile experiences.

Supported Question Types

Per-Answer Explanations are available for the following assessment question types:

  • Single Choice

  • Multiple Choice

  • Fill in the Blanks

  • Ordering

  • Matching

Administrators can choose to add explanations to any or all supported answers within a question.

Adding Explanations

When creating or editing an assessment question, administrators can add an explanation to individual answers.

Examples include:

  • Explaining why a particular answer is correct

  • Clarifying common misconceptions behind incorrect answers

  • Providing additional context or learning references

  • Reinforcing key concepts after assessment completion

Adding explanations is optional, allowing flexibility based on the assessment's purpose.

Bulk Upload Support

Per-Answer Explanations are also supported through bulk question imports.

Administrators can include explanations for supported answer types directly within the bulk upload template, making it easier to create large assessments while maintaining consistent learner feedback.

Any explanation fields left blank will simply be saved without an explanation.

Show Explanations for All Options

A new assessment setting, Show Explanations for All Options, controls how explanations are displayed for Single Choice and Multiple Choice questions.

Where to Find It

The setting is available in:

  • Course Creation → Settings → Assessment Settings

  • Course → Settings → Assessment Settings

  • Event → Session → Assessment → Settings

Default Value: No

When Disabled (Default)

Learners see explanations only for the answer option(s) they selected.

When Enabled

Learners see explanations for all configured answer options, including those they did not select.

This setting applies only to Single Choice and Multiple Choice questions.

Learner Experience

After submitting an assessment, learners receive immediate feedback for their responses.

Depending on the question type, learners can:

  • View whether their answer was correct or incorrect

  • Read the explanation associated with their selected answer

  • Review additional answer explanations when enabled by the administrator

  • Access question-level feedback within the assessment summary

This helps learners understand not only whether an answer was correct, but also why.

Mobile Experience

The mobile app provides the same explanation experience as the web platform.

Learners can:

  • View answer-specific explanations after assessment submission

  • Review correct and incorrect responses

  • Access explanations from the assessment summary screen

  • Navigate assessment results using a mobile-optimized interface

Use Case Example

A compliance assessment includes several questions where learners frequently choose incorrect answers based on common misunderstandings.

By adding explanations to each answer option, learners immediately understand why their choice was correct or incorrect, helping reinforce policy requirements and reduce future mistakes.

If Show Explanations for All Options is enabled, learners can also review the reasoning behind every available answer choice.

Additional Information

  • Existing assessments remain unchanged until explanations are added.

  • Per-Answer Explanations are optional and can be configured on a question-by-question basis.

  • Assessment scoring and grading behavior are unaffected.
